I think it's pretty obvious that Sam Taylor-Johnson took the source material and — as gently as she could — exposed it as the story of an abusive relationship. As it stands, if this is the last entry, it's basically about a girl who grows up, finds her own confidence, and learns to stand up for herself against her

To the point where, tbh, I'm almost wondering if it wasn't actively stolen from it.

For sure. And ultimately where the book fails is in having her acknowledge all of his abuse and then going, "But that dick, tho."

Better yet a cartoon — Lizzie McGuire style.

I think the issue is less that people don't see his behavior for what it is — controlling, stalkerish, abusive, etc. — but rather that they see the great romance of the book as being that these are his "demons" and she's there to save him.

He looks like a potato to me. Can people explain the Charlie Hunnam fascination?

I love people who think that moving to Europe is going to turn them into someone else.

Is that the Milkshake Victim and the Obvious Child?

I like how when old white men are asked to give a single inch, they act like they've had their legs cut off.

Yep. I had to re-read the paragraph a couple of times, because it would've made a lot more sense if the director was pushing for an ending that implied she got freaked out, and that the writer was pushing for it to maintain the "rules" of the book.

The book is garbage, but they knew exactly what they were buying. When all of the movie talks were happening, the series was already a national joke.

Having read the spoiler, I think James's ending is the more interesting choice.

No.

Not necessarily. The context is still important. But if this hasn't been anyone else's experience, then I'm happy to consider my anecdote totally irrelevant.

Sorry, my reading skills are the worst today.

I'm not disagreeing with the theory regarding females, but I am saying that I've also heard men say "males." Those aren't contradictory statements.

I don't understand why privileged people get so upset when they're asked to be decent human beings.

That's fair (and I'm sorry for presuming cis-gender). As others have said, it would be nice if we had an equivalent to "guys," which allows for a casual middle ground.
