You're forgetting about the Vita being able to play the PSP games on PSN. People would have less of a reason to get one if they could just play PSP games on the PS3 too.

PSP games do support mapping for the second analog stick. You touch the screen for a few seconds while in a PSP game and a menu comes up.

If you mean the portals in the light/dark towers, there were clues. You could see the entrance to the other side of the portal if you went to the opposite side, but the other one would be invisible. It took me a while to figure out, but hey, puzzles.
You die after you use Excalibur, and I think one of the fire spells leaves burns on your character after you use it.
