On the other hand, when I would be in between projects for extended stretches, I would purposefully bury myself in a video game. It’s cheap and distracting. And if I’m at home playing a video game, I’m not out of the house, spending money.

I recommend the same approach when people ask me to help them learn to draw, use Photoshop or do photography. It's nice to have a big goal but it's important to have a solid foundation of the basics.
