Some people don't want to write original fiction. Fanfiction is a hobby. It's easier to use already established characters and worlds and write scenes you'd like to see than create your own characters and worlds. For those of us who write gay/lesbian slash fiction of characters that are 'straight' in canon (I've been doing this since 1988, btw) it's because there are few gay characters on television, and when there are, they are rarely the lead characters in a show with fully-developed characters and story lines.

I also think we can probably break up and differentiate some ships. Obviously, this comment will still be generalizing, but I think different ships get popular for different reasons. The way my friends and I talk about it, it normally comes down to:

I had a Eeyore issue that started when I mentioned I like Eeyore. And as he's the most merchandised character, a couple people bought me things like Eeyore pens and shirts. Useful things that I could use, but alas people saw me using them, and next birthday and christmas, everyone was giving me Eeyore stuff.
