I did the same for my dogs, with the stipulation that any balance left when they die goes to a rescue I work with. It’s only fair that the person who cares for them not have to go into debt if they need expensive medical treatment. 

Making it easy to break such wills might be less messy and more helpful.

I will say that there are definitely people for whom pets are like children. My late aunt, for example, made provision in her will for the care of her three cats, alloting $10K for each for their care after her death so my parents wouldn’t have to worry about that.
