This incident perfectly encapsulates why I was never comfortable with the idea of #BelieveWomen

For me its less that I wish otakus were more discerning, and more that I wish the fandom would not act like their particular garbage of the week is truly incredible

Shows like Mushishi, Death Parade, Lain, or even Kino’s journey, are all very solid, and for the most part much more digestible (maybe not Lain as much).

Sadly, the world was robbed of Satoshi Kon too soon: he died of cancer at the age of 46. He only made four feature films, and while he worked on a few series, Paranoia Agent is the only one he created.

I frequently found that anime doesn’t know how to end. Or really any overly long TV series, whether anime or average American television.

I’m just commenting on why it’s odd that it catches more heat than most other series that share similar problems. And it is generally very popular

Samurai Champloo was fresh, original, there’s still nothing like it.

Thats like complaining that as a male adult Hanna Montana didn’t interest you.

I guess I just find it all a bit of a downer.

That is far too much anime. But like any medium — film, novels, TV series, music, etc. — you have to sort through the large amounts of shit to find the gems.

The series is a lot of fun and there’s a lot of great character stuff in there but I could never shake the fact that the cast felt very disconnected.

Its sins are hardly much worse than the average shounen series.

I think I’m in the minority in thinking that Kids on the Slope is actually a better work by Watanabe

You tout as a weakness what I consider to be Monster’s greatest strength. While I agree it does nothing to leverage the medium, that’s a good thing. When it came out, it was unique. Most anime followed Shoujen anime tropes and it was a show that easily could’ve been a very successful live action drama and it told its

Alas, I don’t read manga anymore, but I like your enthusiasm, so I’m going to recommend your post in hopes that people who enjoy Monster will see it and check out your recommendation!

“Imitation” is an odd way of spelling sequel/spiritual successor... Perhaps you are confused?

Your opinion on Monster is positively disgusting.

The only thing that was better in Champloo IMO was the animation

It’s not unusual for an anime community to split between Samurai Champloo and Cowboy Bebop, so I don’t consider it suspect per se. It often comes down to whether you prefer swords and hip hop, or space and jazz. But for my money, Cowboy Bebop is just plain ol’ better made.

I’ve seen a lot of anime, though I’m also a major critic of most anime... and both Black Lagoon and Monster come up as mediocre in my mind. They do nothing to leverage the medium, and Monster in particular goes on and on and on... amounting to very little by the end. Should’ve kept it a concise 26 episodes, I think.
