Launchpad? Mac App Store? Gatekeeper?

I know they haven't jumped on it wholesale like Microsoft have, but explain the reasoning behind Launchpad.

As mentioned, this is probably a short-term effort to get more of these on the shelves for purchase over the holiday season. Once the supply gets a bit closer to the demand, they'll be back to turning them out in the Far East.
