Wondering if there was a Univision feed they could have turned to?

This might be the massive amount of beer I drank earlier from watching the WC game but fuck it; I love Lorde's music. Jesus, why do people shit on this poor girl? Atleast she's trying to do something different. Not that bubble gum-pop shit. This is actually my favorite song from her.

This. New fan, and I saw most of Argentina's games, and I don't get it.

That very well may be true, I don't know enough about soccer to say otherwise, but for all of that "Lionel Messi is better at soccer than anyone else is at anything" stuff it sure didn't translate to the uninitiated. I can't imagine anyone ever watching a basketball game, say, and wondering why people make a fuss

That escalated quickly. You alright over there?

I wanted to see DEU v NLD for the final and ARG v BRA for third because of the long standing rivalries. I mean that final would be brutal. At least Brazil doesn't have to lose to Argentina at any point. They say it will be worse if Argentina wins but I think it would have been worse if they had lost their semi and

Remember that SNL sketch where Will Farrell plays a congressman who runs post election attack ads on his opponent for weeks. Like, even though he wins the election, he spends millions of dollars gratitiously attacking his old opponent. That's you right now.

Brazil's 2014 World Cup campaign is basically similar to that of Russia's 2014 Olympics men's hockey campaign - They're not nearly as good as they think they still are.

Yeah but if for any reason Germany/Argentina can't fulfill the duties of the World Cup winner and first runner up, whoever wins and loses, then Nederland gets the gig.

Why was there no open thread for this match? Weekend Deadspin is lazy Deadspin.

Congratulations. Emily is gonna grow up to be literally the worst.

yes, because no one would ever watch a friendly between 2 big global teams featuring their best fit stars...

No, it's exactly the same as an Olympic bronze-medal game in a team sport. There is no difference whatsoever except for the fact FIFA doesn't call it the World Cup Bronze Medal. You're telling me Olympic basketball/handball/hockey/soccer/volleyball etc. teams don't "come to the Olympics to win"?

Yes! This whole article actually does a pretty good job arguing FOR a third place match. Between the title and the last line, all I get it that it really does have a purpose even if the Dutch don't like it.

Other people have mentioned nations that took pride in third. Also, if you go to the World Cup wiki page, 3rd and 4th finishes are listed right along side 1st and runner-up. It is not just a footnote and it seems it matters a lot to the countries that get third, especially if they were not necessarily expected to

what I take from this article and the evidence given, is that everyone loves and watches the third place game except some of the millionaire soccer players who want to get a couple day start on their vacation.

So third place games to award bronze medals are fine at the Olympics but have no place at the World Cup?

There are lots of things wrong with FIFA, but them giving us another World Cup game to watch is not one of them.

I love the point of, "I mean how memorable can it be? Sure the Uruguay/Germany match was pretty memorable but I digress..." I think it's a great opportunity for younger players on each side to prove a point versus some of the best players in the world for consideration in future tournaments.
