All the more unfortunate because "always overshadowed" is pretty much written into the new one's character.

It's great (for a certain definition of great), but it's also a gimmick. In comics death, brain swaps, clones, "passing of the torch" are all gimmicks. Regardless of how good the writing is, don't be naive enough to think that at some point it didn't come down to "will this bump sales".

Even better than they carried over that version into his later appearances. I personally don't think he's been better than in Marvel Zombies, but his "payment" for signing up with the Initiative was... awesome.
