Yep. This was the thing that instantly ticked me off in that movie and I never recovered. The primary theme of Aliens was Ripley overcoming her demons AND reclaiming meaning in her life. Her meaning came from protecting Newt, which she swore to do and then she kicked ass to do.

I don't buy that. I'd perhaps buy that if Alien3 was a better film, but it's not. It sucks.

I think what you are referring to is the light from the stars lying behind the nebula. The lighter areas are less dense parts of the gas and the darker are more dense, which is why they block more of the light shining through.
