To be fair, according to the review, micromanagement of your companions is pretty much the whole point of the gameplay loop; if they were a lot more intelligent and autonomous it might be a credible Gears of War, but it would not be an XCOM game.

Sometimes games are linear because they need to be, and some times, because of budget/technology limitations, linearity is just making a virtue out of necessity. You can see a lot more Open World games this generation simply because they are more feasible To more teams.
