You can't value players just on their "actual baseball" benefit, because there is more to it than that. You claim it's for PR purposes (which I'm sure is partially true) but fail to realize that what he does in the locker room and as a captain is equally as important as what he does on the field.
That doesn't make sense. He's signed for a year regardless. Now he's signed for a year but at a price higher for this season, but lower for purposes of the Luxury Tax, which means they save many millions anyway. It literally has no downside and it makes Jeter even happier, so how exactly is any mission failed?
