Thank you for this. I try to steer clear of any discussions on Gawker that involve the broad, nebulous (as presented here) concept of "science." The idea that science is somehow free of ideology is naive at best, which is often demonstrated by the fervent, emotional tone of "science person" type commentators when…
Ugh, so true. Slightly off-topic, but reminds me of another aspect of this: all of the eating disordered women I went to graduate school with had "food politics" and "ethical eating practices" that banned meat, chocolate, bread, cheese....pretty much everything except little bowls of kale and chickpeas and green tea.…
I love it!
If there was any doubt before, it is now certain: the new Gilded Age has arrived!
Thanks for pointing out the intersectional aspects of this issue. This is class warfare, and racism as well.
I will admit that my initial reaction was positive-I kind of like the industrial-goth lite vibe of the clothing and lipstick. However, upon further inspection her hairstyle doesn't work with the overall look. Also (although it is hard to tell from just one picture), her facial expression and posture suggest that she…
Agree. I don't see the appeal here. I thought that she was terribly miscast in Zero and definitely the weak link there.
Oooooh I like this idea!
This was my reaction as well. This is a long game, and the abortion bill will ultimately be easier to defeat.
Ancient Aliens is so fun, though! I admit, I do enjoy the speculation and fantasy. Shows like this are like my reality television. At least the far-out thought in AA-type theories isn't as ugly or sad as Sandy Hook conspiracies et al.
I am working on an article on conspiracy theories in academic though, and I have been searching for this guy's work for awhile. Thanks for the citation!
See my reply to Nicole. I do think it is a legitimate topic of discussion, despite how tempting it is to let the practice off of the hook entirely due to its emotionally sympathetic nature.
It is a tough one, though. I love this Henna art. Admittedly, however, I also like Belly Dancing, and according to that Salon article awhile back it is problematic cultural appropriation. Where to draw the line isn't always clear.
This is really annoying, and I can relate. It seems that every time we go to a playground, zoo, beach, etc. other people's unsupervised, feral children gravitate to us. We end up having to watch our son and babysit them. Sucks!
Agree. I am a mother and I'm still pretty chill.
This was me too. Except I have something to show for my "carefree" lifestyle: a big 'ol pile of debt!
I hear you. I have a kid and zero regrets. Yes, I had to dial back my drinking, adopt a more early to bed/early to rise sleep schedule, and become more financially responsible. I stay out late at bars/parties maybe a couple of times per year as opposed to weekly. However, doing all of those things built my character…
If it's any consolation, drinking and Netflix is pretty much my nightly routine too. I just do it with my husband after the kid is asleep.
I wonder if their are other factors involved with your friends' misery, such as marriage problems/unhelpful spouses, lack of resources and support, etc. I have a kid and I'm a very happy person who wouldn't have it any other way, but I'm very privileged and lucky in some crucial respects.
