The best thing I do to beat jet lag, especially when traveling eastward, is to eat large meals at precise meal times. It makes me feel more awake in the morning to have a big, balanced breakfast, and it keeps me on a schedule. Plus, food is half the point of traveling.

I think it depends on the length of the short leg. 2 hours or less doesn't feel like much so it's not nearly as bad as if it were 3 or 5 hours.
