I would normally agree with your objection to hyperbole, but smoking is known to cause a number of serious birth defects that can affect the entire life of the baby. It's not 1960 anymore. It's a very bad thing to smoke while pregnant and it can harm the child.

Yes, both times. It was embarrassing for everyone involved, including me, but I knew that neither of them wanted to go around offending people before they even said a word. I am guessing that it's because her parents were neglectful and never told her, so she never knew. She eventually would have figured it out. You did her a favor.
