The fists are unstoppable with decent boons and the range extending Daedalus upgrade. I have only beaten Hades with the fists, though I have gotten close with the shield and spear.

I very much doubt this is what happened. It may have been Hardsuit or Paradox not liking what they saw, but I seriously doubt Paradox had no idea how “dark” Vampire could get. 

A specialized strike team of githyanki hunting an ancient plane-hopping illithid invasion ship is actually fairly likely to have some way to gate or plane shift to follow quickly. My guess is an artifact rather than a gate spell.
