That's the one area you gotta be delicate, and slowly place it down where marked. Thankfully motherboards now come with a cap on the CPU socket, so they can't be bent while going through the mail to you.

If you have a problem with bending the pins, here's a thing you might try. Take the tip of a mechanical pencil (without lead, of course :) and if you can get the tip over the bent pin, slowly lift it back straight.
