You’re asking the wrong question. You should be asking why people leave cash and credit cards inside of a car that they are not presently occupying. Most times they won’t even take cupholder change, they want easy and quick and obvious.

And as a former Miata owner, replacing a top is expensive too.  Leave nothing of real value in the car. 

Because replacing a window glass is more expensive than anything I keep in the car. 

In Michigan it used to be done with a plastic sled behind a beater on a dirt road dodging rocks.

Yeah, when I first saw the new Ford Ranger on the road, I was like WTF that is huge and seems just as big as the prior gen F150.
