Park is a button located on top of the stalk. So when you start up, it starts in P, turning the knob forwards engages D, backwards for R.

That's the starter button.

My dad's car when i was a kid. That was all it took.

I find the selector on the BMW i3 to work really well. It's column mounted but still retains a little stubby knob and is more intuitive than a stalk.
