It's probably a lot larger than the star. To get correct infrared readings, most if not all of the corona of the star would have to be covered. And if we've learned anything from our own star, the corona can get pretty huge depending on the magnetic weather.
Personally, I don't see why great old pictures have to look like crap. Vignetting and loss of contrast does not a great retro photo make.
