The guy doesn't want to rely on submissiveness because it's cliche and usually done cheaply. At least that's what I get out of it.
That sucks, but he brought it on himself. It's always worth it to cool down for 10 seconds before acting when you get flustered or stressed out. To think that all he had to do was send an email or make a phone call.
