I also had the same queasiness about that series. Despite being an anglophile librarian with a soft spot for cozy mysteries, I never could bring myself to read one.  Our monthly mystery book club did choose a title from McCall Smith, The Sunday Philosophy Club, but that wasn't my jam either.
