Our Odyssey is like this too.  If it had the navigation package there would be stereo controls below the HVAC, but since ours just had the 6 disc changer its a convenient little covered compartment for whatever we need.

Our 07 Caravan had a green LED there for that purpose, our 07 Odyssey has an off yellow one, and my MS3 has a distinctly blue one for the same purpose.  Its a fantastic little touch that wouldn’t be missed if it never existed, but is a surprising QoL improvement at night for such a minor part
