It’s so bad that I see many reviewers tiptoeing around it. Not wanting to insert a spoiler, but mentioning in an obtuse way that towards the end there is a moment of sheer stupidity in resolving the conflict.

Most people don’t “come out of the gate” directing films either. They work through the ranks in technical roles, honing their craft, advancing into “second unit” work, and then finally into helming a film. They generally have at least a decade or two of experience before they are given that responsibility.
