I saw our president last night when talking to reporters after coming back from his golf vaca. In the comments, it sounded like he thinks the national debt (he said we have a 36 Trillion dollar deficit) and the various trade deficits are the same thing.

I genuinely didn’t know that conservative voters have been convinced that trade deficits and the budget deficit are connected in that way. Huh.

You’re wasting your time. A person’s mental capacity would have to be severely mentally diminished to believe that tariffs will stop illegal narcotics and illegal immigrants.

So normally I would come on here and call conservatives a bunch of pejoratives, but I’ve had a number of social media interactions that make me think perhaps people legitimately don’t understand how economics and government budgets work. So this is going to be a rare, good-faith attempt from me to explain this stuff…

Just... pay people more?  Or we can keep begging for cheaper prices on goods while continuing to ignore the fact that adjusted wages have barely moved in 3+ decades.

Also worth noting that nothing in that quote talks about things getting better. Nothing in any quote talks about how any of these decisions will actually improve anything. Not even a concept of how things can get better anymore.
