Psychologically, actual interactive violence IS quite different from passive viewing of it. For example, one study I've seen found that children become more aggressive after playing semi-violent video games than they do after watching violent shows/movies.

I ended up not liking Starcraft 2 much, but honestly, that has more to do with how I've changed since the original than anything else. Becoming an adult makes it a lot harder to get friends together to play a game of Starcraft.
