I understand the disappointment-that-this-fantastic-game-isn't-better feeling, since I also feel like the Wii U desperately needs a killer app. I felt the same way about 3D Land and the 3DS. It was a great game, but it didn't completely fix the sense of uncertainty about the 3DS's future.
And thus, Nintendo advertised the Wii U to more of its target audience than it ever could with TV ads.

If by "Mario stuff" you mean "2D/3D platformers" and not "games starring a plumber," then you should definitely get Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon. And Fire Emblem is fantastic, so good call there.
