Is it intellectually honest to call this plagiarism? They definitely share the same theme, to an astonishing degree, but not exactly the same. I mean plagiarism’s definition includes “ideas” but it may be a little of a stretch when most people think of a direct or nearly direct copy as plagiarism.

That is messed up. If you were an independent contractor... sure, you pay for your tools. But if you are working for a company it is unreasonable to expect you to buy your own.

I would go wired, but with my cat who loves to sit on my lap during gaming sessions on my couch, sees dangling wires as a personal challenge.
