"Assault Rifle" isn't exactly a U.S. Army term. It's simply a rifle. I would never identify my M4, or the AK that the enemy was pointing at me, as an "assault rifle," it'd just be a rifle, or a weapon. The next step up would be "Machine gun," or "Automatic weapon."
