Could I suggest a minor tweak to the title? 'Hypothesis: Obesity is partly due to factors beyond our control'
Could I suggest a minor tweak to the title? 'Hypothesis: Obesity is partly due to factors beyond our control'
That is an excellent point.
I criticized a large subset because I don't know if it is a majority or not; I don't have any hard data on this, its not my area of research.
I agree that both of those things are important. What I was pointing out is that some people will hear the news and respond like this "That must be why I am overweight, it is all Glaxo-Smith-Kleine's fault I should sue them and remain unhealthily overweight."
I was a little cranky when I wrote this (for IRL reasons) and it now seems more mean spirited than I had intended. However, sadly, I believe the major point, that too many overweight people makes excuses because facing the truth is scary as hell, is true.
Its the internet, if this is news to you then you must be new here.
Everything you said is perfectly reasonable, however it cannot be denied that there is a large subset of overweight and obese people who are that way because they are making excuses rather than being affected by one (or several) of these problems.
Great you had just given Americans another excuse for being fat and taking zero action about it "its not because i drink only soda and don't exercise; I have a hormone imbalance and I sprained my ankle as a child so I can't exercise and I once had to take antibiotics so now I'm morbidly obese."
That is because she was going into Canada and not America...
The Federal Government assembled a task-force? Well problem solved.
As usual I have a problem with the science!
I can't help but notice there is not a note of remorse from Jezebel on contributing by airing this to thousands of readers....
I was just thinking about degrees of separation in the porn industry and thought if there was a male performer called Bacon Kevins (not the worst porn name ever, I think) then we could have a concrete measure of who has banged whom...
I don't see why it needs to be a feminist article for that. I find being confronted by man nipples shoving through a shirt to be equally distracting!
Agreed; a big problem in getting girls into STEM is the lack of visibility of women in this area. Most of the 'role-models' (in the loosest possible sense of the word) that girls are exposed to are not being celebrated for their intelligence.
Its actually about physical weight. Heavier people have a larger distribution volume which affects how much of the drug is where it is supposed to be at any given time. Take 1000mg of drug and put it into a 200kg person and they are getting (roughly) half the concentration of drug as someone who weights 100kg.
Bumping the dose up with these types of drugs is very dangerous because they can cause rapid clotting. That is why you cant take them more than once every few months; the body needs time to break the clots down. If you bump the dose you might go from forming small clots that float around without problems to large…
I went to the journal website and searched for it, couldn't find a link either. I didn't read the protocol particularly closely so I can't say whether they were using donors or not. Thanks for the FSH knowledge!
Huge rant aside...
Glad someone else went to the trouble of looking up the paper. I guess I should have known you'd be here sciencing the place up! I know I give you enough stars over at io9...
