In regards to Thatcher I can't help but think part of it is down to the fact that most of the country (UK) thinks she's a monster anyway so the upside down eyes sort of matched anyway.

re: Doctor's Daughter - I think people were hoping she'd pop back up in some significant capacity a la River Song, and given the parade of cameos Journey's End turned into there was disappointment that nothing ever came of her.

Then again considering how River's subsequent arc was handled it was probably for the best.

The most maddening thing about The Doctor's Daughter is that they insinuate that she regenerated and the end and then did absolutely nothing with that loose end.
