They are doing it to make far less media outlets go through the emails. Also it is really easy to search for keywords in the electronic version, in paper, some one has to go through all the pages looking for keywords.

It is because the background is blurred, if the newer shot was taken on a DSLR with a large enough aperture lens, it would look the same.
