Not as big a change as between STreet Fighter (the original) and Alpha, where he changed race. Apparently in his first appearance, he was just really pale because he’d been sick.
It looks like a joke. They probably meant it to say they were going to “war,” both to show how serious they took the competition, and how self-aware they were about the ridiculousness of taking it that seriously.
Because as we’ve been told since we were children, fitting in with your peers, even if it makes you uncomfortable, is the most important thing in life. As the sayings go, let peer pressure be your guide, and if all your friends jump off a bridge, for God’s sake, do be the last to go!
