Yeah; multiple major fixes can happen on any mass-produced vehicle. Just have to keep your fingers crossed & hope you get lucky. I do know that VW's diesel engines tend to last forever. My parents were in the market for a new midsize sedan last month. They were stuck on the Fusion, but I recommended they look at the Passat. Dad: "really, you think I should get a VW?" Me: "There's a turbo diesel version." Dad: "Ooooh, ok." Three days later, they bought one, and are thrilled with it!
