The flaws I speak of are the intentional ones: ones that are used to prove a point, set a character arc in motion, and so on. If a character is weak (and maybe even submissive!), but grows over time, then that weakness is acceptable in my eyes.

Kind of a pity that writing female characters with personality flaws is frowned upon these days. Many writers and fans seem to think that writing women to be powerful and independent does the medium and gender justice. Examples are numerous:
