as someone who's going through something similar, I have to say that's pretty solid advice.

with the pet situation a bit of tolerance may pay off, because maybe they just haven't been exposed to pets yet. my sister's husband said he didn't like cats when they got together, but my sister is true cat lady, anyway, the guy ended up really loving the cats (as well as there 2 dogs).
