I lost my religion the day my Sunday school teacher told me my cat didn’t have a soul. I’m not kidding. Even my father marks it as the day I became agnostic leaning heavily on atheist.

I work in a shelter, so I FULLY support this ban, and mandatory spay/neuter, and so on, and I’ve already seen the difference these types of policies make in shelter population and euthanasia rate. Unfortunately legislation won’t make much of a dent in the backyard/underground breeding, but humane education will, so

There *are* some very couch potato pitbulls out there. There’s one at work right now that I would LOVE to take home if we didn’t already have a dog and three cats.

That is completely untrue that you can’t find a breed other than pit bulls or hounds, and there are breed specific rescues all over the country. The only reality is that 2.7 million animals are killed every year and adding more animals contributes to that. If you aren’t part of the solution you are part of the

I totally agree. Want to know your dog’s temperament? Adopt an adult dog.

I get what you’re saying, but it is reminding me of the NRA argument that “if guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns”. We have to start somewhere to stop all the unnecessary deaths.

My very handsome childhood mutt lived to be my post-uni mutt, living to 20, still quite aware and mobile, if with a tendency to more frequent and longer napping (and with a bit of arthritis that we managed with occasional half doses of children’s aspirin). And I think he would have gone on longer if my dad hadn’t died

I think there’s a big overlap between people who want an expensive, fashionable dog and people that don’t realize a dog is a lot of work/will chew your furniture/will cost a lot in vet bills. They buy the dog, realize just how much work and $ is involved, and then dump it at a shelter once it’s past the cute puppy

Concerns about temperament are exactly why I only adopt adult dogs. People think that they will end up with a dog that is easy to live with if they raise the dog themselves, and buy a breed whose “personality” fits their lifestyle. But the truth is that breed personality types are stereotypes. And the breed specific

Also I am not so sure if a human life is worth ANY amount of puppies. You’ll be hard pressed to find a more perfect example of pure, undistilled GOOD in the world, than a wonderful loving dog. They truly are wonderful remarkable animals and deserve to be treated well.

So basically unless they can put forward a “This Fixes Every Problem” Bill they shouldn’t bother fixing anything.

And I agree with that sentiment. I think it’s a lot more complicated, because if you outlaw clothing (which, clothing is a necessity) from sweatshops, suddenly clothing becomes a lot more expensive. That is the ethical thing, but the ethics and the economics run in completely opposite directions. Here, we can use the

Outside of wolf, there’s no such thing as “purebred” - only genetic manipulations through husbandry to produce wanted traits. Breeds are horseshit.

Fun fact: we Californians can focus on and accomplish several tasks simultaneously...sooooooo thanks I guess? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I work in a shelter, I can assure you that a lot of people do not want to pay for a used puppy. They’ll pay $800 for a puppy at a store, but as soon as it enters the shelter, $100 is too much and they think they should get it for free. I’m dead serious. Puppies don’t have much resale value, they’re worse than cars

it’s not an off chance that puppy store puppies are from puppy mills. It is 100% the case. Good, reputable breeders don’t sell their puppies in stores.

Umm, false equivalency much?

Ewww, used pets? No thank you. I prefer my to buy my pets brand new so I can enjoy discovering their genetic defects.

Maybe there should be a tax on pedigree animals? That will dissuade all these celebs buying some niche (and likely deformed) breed and causing a fucking cottage industry to erupt of breeding the darn thing. If there’s one thing’s that scares the shit out of rich people it’s the idea of having to part with any amount
