Honestly, I'm not sure why he needed to stop using Flash. Adobe Air games appear on Steam, for instance. Even if he was adamant about changing engine, Gamemaker would've done. It doesn't really fly as an excuse that Unity (which is advertised as a 3D engine) doesn't 'fit' so he gave up.
One or two failures is expected, it's hardly a reason to jump ship. It's also an up-front risk of crowd-funding. It's still less risky for the individual backer than most things in life people throw money at.
