I actually suspect this company is pretty disgustingly using marketing speak to imply a link with Valve, Steam and Steam boxes, where none actually exists.

I think people are looking at it wrong. The mistake here is they labelled the centre four buttons X, Y etc, so people think of them as being used as the same face buttons on a traditional gamepad. I would guess so, as it has concentric circles on the pad, which denote distance from the centre.
