I have to work, so I’m going to let the entire cast of Popular pretend to be shocked by this.

Do you still remember your student I.D.? Are you still emotionally traumatized by the word, “validated?”

Well, that’s interesting. Thank you for sharing.

Well, that’s also assuming black people’s responsibility to white people is to clean up their mess. Clearly, this woman is messy. She was messy then, and she is messy now. But the rest of us worked very hard to earn our degrees. We are not suddenly going to drop everything we’re doing to correct her. It’s actually her

Let me tell you this. I’m a black woman, and I wear a relaxer. I still have my hair decisions challenged/questioned all the time. Even by other black people. Even if I travel abroad, I have to explain my hair to somebody.

Part of it is that women in general are measured by their appearances first, their politics after

I studied graphic design at Howard and the program — like many other art and design programs at liberal arts schools — is very small. It has a long and storied legacy, but traditional painting, design, drawing, and art history take up only one floor in the Dept. of Art at Howard University. Meaning, nearly everyone

I think one of the biggest misconceptions that folks who didn’t go to HBCUs think about students who do is that we hate white people, have never been around white people, and/or don’t want to be around them. Never mind the academic achievement and cost benefits involved in that decision. No, we just hate white people.

I saw this young man walking down the street earlier this week. He seems to have recovered well, and likely has a summer internship. Glad to see him recovering so well!

Well, since we’re all hypocrites it’s fine. Let’s all never question it, and bury it real deep.

Why is it when moviegoers ask the industry to be thoughtful and empathetic, they quiver in fear and get para—
Oh, right. Hollywood is out of ideas.

And can we also talk about the higher scalp sebum production that makes it very difficult to wash her hair on the regular? Generally people of European descent produce more sebum and need more frequent hair washes. You can tell because the roots are very greasy and clumpy.

But generally for people of African descent,

What about that time Aunt Helen on Fresh Prince said, “Lester, don’t make me get ethnic on you!”

It’s not enough to have:
The Howard degree in Africana Studies...
Her copies of Essence Magazine...
Her FB updates about “12 Years A Slave”...
No. It’s, “Not only do I know your hair texture scales, I’m the kinkiest.”

Well, that’s going to take forever. I went to Howard, and I know how hard it is to get a copy of your transcript. I keep mine protected in a plastic folder like it’s a life insurance policy.

The only thing she couldn’t do right was get a relaxer. I absolutely dig that she wore other styles, but it’s telling that she didn’t even try for a relaxer. And the reasons are not that her hair was already straightened so she didn’t need one. Whether or not you wear one, you have to own up to the fact that hair

Okay, I was almost with you...until you opened with the word, “See...” That tells me you think I don’t understand something, and that I need further explanation. I know how identities work. I don’t need them explained to me.

Here’s a list of other things I can do:
1. Maintain more than one thought in my head: One being

Well, you go ‘head then. And I understand your outrage. But frankly, I don’t have the energy to start labeling others. I’d rather put that energy toward myself, as I am multiple identities.

And here is the moment when a hotboy becomes a fuccboi: He can be really, really hot. Then do/say something so ugly it makes him tragically unattractive.
