It's clearly taken from one of the biggest inspirations to D&D: the works of Robert E. Howard. The fact that the author thinks this is "unknowable," when Howard is cited right there in Appendix N, is rather baffling.

There's one movie which I loved because it made FUN of the gratuitous 3D shots - Monsters Vs. Aliens. But it was based on the old 50's, campy 3D horror flicks like Creature from The Black Lagoon, or The Blob. It was a nice homage, poking fun at it. :)

Yes, that's exactly the sort of thing I'm talking about, and I think I was pulled out of WSoD at the same time in that movie. Avatar was one long "look at the 3D!" for me - it was very pretty, but I went to enjoy a narrative, not just special effects.
