I had a conversation with Lynda Barry about this once. How, sometimes in dreams you are reading a book that <i>does not exist</i> in the real world, and yet in the dream you are reading and enjoying an original work of fiction — yet when you wake up, you can't remember or write down anything you just saw.

If I might be so bold (as someone who has walked away from fiction writing), I would suggest this is a bit too much work for even those who plot and plan their stories.

I've also found that reading aloud, what I have written, helps; especially when writing dialogue.
