I'm pretty sure Future Pike told him the Klingons showed him everything that happens anytime he fights back. And the result was always the same. Spock is the one who takes his place and its vital he doesn't, end of the universe stuff. 

I can’t help but feel the entire trilogy was told out of order... Parts of IX (specifically Palps return) should have been 7, the search for luke should have been VII and then IX should have just been the final confrontations with the resistance spread all over.
