I'm so sorry to hear about your dad's diagnosis. I totally understand wanting to please him, but you can't plan your life around someone else's expectations, even someone you love. I bet deep down your dad cares more about you being happy than finding a husband.
I just saw the news about the FSU football guy winning the Heisman Trophy. Something about his smiling face in the headlines, and FSU people all happy in my FB feed...I just snapped and burst into tears in my livingroom. I've been a Jez lurker for years but I'm filled with such a strangled, deeply unquenchable rage…
I don't understand why this guy didn't stop to think, "Hmm...chick won't give me her phone number or email and instead sends me on a 'quest' to find her, knowing that doing so is like telling someone to find a needle in the biggest haystack ever? Perhaps she doesn't like me as much as I like her."
Jesus (actually Yeshua ben Yousef (Joshua son of Joseph)) was a Semite from what is now the Near East who spoke Amaraic, the linguistic ancestor of what is today's Arabic. He'd have looked more Middle Eastern than European.
I was being flippant during my History of Religions class and went, " I'm Catholic, of course I like Cultural Appropriation. How the hell do you think I got all these awesome holidays to celebrate." My teacher, being a fellow Catholic, starts laughing heartily. The two Wiccans smirked wickedly while the Southern…
"The appearance of Santa Claus or Father Christmas, whose day is 25th of December, owes much to Odin, the old blue-hooded, cloaked, white-bearded Giftbringer of the north, who rode the midwinter sky on his eight-footed steed Sleipnir, visiting his people with gifts. … Odin, transformed into Father Christmas, then…
I remember someone asking me what the Jewish God "looks like," and when I explained that in Judaism we see God as unknowable, he was like, "But... no beard and throne?"
Also, St. Nicholas was born in Greece and lived in what is now Turkey. I've lost track of whether that's 'white' or not, but it's definitely less WASPy than these guys seem to believe.
And Santa Claus (Saint Nicholas) lived in modern day Turkey if I remember correctly.
Did you happen to see the recent "How dare you say Christmas was appropriated from pagan and other winter festivals?" panel issue in the last day or two? I'm constantly surprised at how ignorant these folks are. Like, they have to go out of their way to not learn actual things.
Probably best not to tell her he was Turkish Greek. It might hurt her pretty little blonde head.
Kim Kardashian's body has returned to her. No longer shall her intangible consciousness float around helplessly, searching in vain for its corporeal form.
Self-pity whinge ahead...
My go-to Christmas classic: The Bishop's Wife, starring Cary Grant (!), David Niven, and Loretta Young. It is whimsical and charming, and genuinely touching. Plus, you get to see Cary Grant ice skate! What's not to love?
1) It's a Wondeful Life
And sometimes it hurts so bad you wish for a beheading.
My favorite is National Lampoon Christmas. I have high brow taste.
Burt please explain to me difference between white and gray post, please and how many likes does it take to make your post white.
Who here has seasonal affective disorder? I have not been diagnosed with it but reading people's accounts of it sound so, so similar to what I am going through right now. I do have a HappyLight that I've used in years past and finally dug it out today (my parents gave it to me when I moved to Canada…smart people) so…
