The Japanese title is "メビウス" which I assume is from "メビウスの帯" or in English "Mobius strip." Why they went with "Mevius" instead of "Mobius?" I'm guessing they thought it looked cooler.

I have also always loved The Giving Tree and for similar reasons. Except for me it wasn't the lack of happy ending.
