I'm no networking expert, so correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't I still need a router? Can switches generally handle PPPoE settings? I didn't think so.

I can't use my Xbox online, because I'm in an apartment with ethernet jacks in the wall which connect to a router somewhere. To connect to the internet on any device I need to enter my PPPoE username and password, but the Xbox One can't do this even though the Xbox 360 can.
