This is a bad take. NA flat 6’s at 9000 RPM are glorious.
I was all jazzed to say “do people even paper race anymore in this digital world” and agree but then I saw comments to change my mind.
I occasionally like to see if I can get close to the lap times in Gran Turismo or Forza, and usually find that even without real-world fears and problems my skills are still lacking. So I admire the skill of the drivers, engineers, and crew to achieve those results.
Lap times matter as much as any other statistic. 0-60 tells you about its acceleration off the line, 60-0 tells you how quickly it stops, lateral g’s tell you how much it grips, but lap times tell you the end result.
It’s mostly just an exercise in willy-waving. I’m never going to wring the neck out of one of these beauties on a track and need that 0.2 seconds a lap it is faster than the other car. However, it does matter to some people, they might never manage anything near that, but it matters to them anyway, and it might help…
Should Company A’s sales suffer just because they hired a worse test driver than Company B?
Couldn’t have said it better myself.
Tell me in the comments below whether lap times impress you or you’re bored by the trend.
Greatness in human achievements is often under-apprciated at the time it takes place. That’s just how it works with disruptive events that too few can properly comprehend.
Thank you Aaron Gordon for wasting many minutes of my life wading through your endless screed only to find the point was to criticize Boomers, not the space program.
That SUV has now seen more crawling than the average Wrangler. *zips up flame suit*
Finally, someone using their mall-crawler for a mall-crawling-adjacent activity.
This story is an uncomfortable reminder that pretty much everybody thinks their opinion is on the correct side of history....
Counterpoint: the Soviet Union and the chekist thugs that ran that evil empire, were bankrupted.
They’re already wearing a thong on their head... how much sexier can you get?
I’m a boomer.I intend to buy a couple of them just to piss off the naysayers and dump some of the accumulated wealth that my ungrateful children would have otherwise inherited.
I seem to recall that there is one socialist European car company that realized that its customer base has an affinity for their traditional engine layout and manages to compete with the mid-engined clones in both presenting more affordable versions as well as super high performance versions of the car.
