The reason a turbocharged unit is more efficient is because you get the power of a V8 when you need it without the additional weight and reciprocating/rotating mass of two extra cylinders and valve train.

Wouldn't using higher octane fuel return better gas mileage on a turbocharged rig? The way I see it the ECU is retarding timing and richening the mixture to keep the combustion chamber temps down to prevent pre-detonation.

True E motors do have torque curves and red lines but the electronic inverter (assuming this is a multi-phase AC induction motor) can handle much of what you speak of without the use of added weight from gears, cases and oil.
