I know I’m not responding to the bulk of your response (busy day at work) but she was not using it to justify her opinion solely. I think you missed a very important detail of the event. This is not USB-C, but Thunderbolt 3 which uses the same port standard as USB-C. In this way it can act as both. As I understand it, all Thunderbolt 3 ports are also USB-C, but not all USB-C ports are Thunderbolt 3.
