True, but I think that’s on Twitter more than the police in this case. They are making it available with their API, and if they don’t do that, then the police would have to do something illegal to get the data.

We are talking about two different things here. I am referring to data that is willingly handed over. You can mark it as private or public, and they have chosen public.

That is much more of a problem than I was initially thinking. It’s one thing to be monitoring live data, but another to be assembling digital dossier’s on all of your citizens.

I like your response, and I agree with almost all of it. I do not think monitoring public information during ongoing attacks would fall into the invasion of privacy category. Storing and compiling irrelevant data DOES invade privacy and should be restricted to a similar process such as a warrant.

If a police officer is driving down the street and happens to see me doing something illegal, it is his job to notice and stop me. It’s clearly a new age, and I don’t see anything wrong with using a computer the way I don’t fault him for using a police car. They need tools to do their job.

They are able to do that, so I’m not sure what your point is. I care about my privacy, which is why I don’t use those services (facebook, twitter, etc), and their terms are very clear that you should should not expect your data to remain private. Once you post it is out there for anyone to see.
